A Comprehensive Guide to Root Canal Procedures

Getting a root canal is a treatment many first-timers can find intimidating. But thanks to modern technology and experienced dentists, you can be sure that your procedure is pain-free and performed in a comfortable setting. Read on to know more about root canals so that you can go ahead and book that appointment with a dentist near you!

What is a Root Canal?

Also known as endodontic therapy, this is a surgical dental process that can help to save teeth from extraction and experiencing future harm.

The pulp is the center of the tooth where nerves and tissues gather. It extends down into the root canals and jawbone. When the pulp becomes damaged or infected, it can cause chronic pain, swelling, discoloration and other serious symptoms. By removing the pulp, the internal structure and overall function and integrity of the tooth can be restored as well as preserved.

If you are dealing with any of the aforementioned problems, it’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible to determine if root canal treatment is needed.

When is a Root Canal Really Necessary?

An unhealthy tooth that is not treated on time can lead to the spread of infection in other teeth or even other body parts. In extreme cases of neglect, it can lead to life-threatening diseases as well.

Root canal treatment can help to relieve pain and other symptoms. It can also prevent the need for more extensive dental work in the future.

When taken proper care of, dental crowns can last for up to 35 years. It makes the entire process of getting a root canal cost-effective and long-lasting.

Steps in the Root Canal Procedure

  1. Examination and Diagnosis: The first step will be an assessment where your dentist will examine the tooth and determine if root canal treatment is necessary. Our dentist will take X-rays to determine the extent of the damage and assess the condition of the surrounding teeth and gums.
  2. Anesthesia: A local anesthetic will be administered to numb the area around the tooth. This will ensure that you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
  3. Accessing the Pulp: Once the area is numb, a small hole will be made in the top of the infected tooth to access the pulp chamber. This hole will allow our dentist to remove the infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth.
  4. Cleaning and Shaping the Canals: The next step is to clean and shape the root canals. Our dentist will use a series of small files to remove the infected or damaged tissue and shape the canals to receive the filling material.
  5. Filling the Canals: Once the canals have been cleaned and shaped, our dentist will fill them with “gutta-percha”. This material seals the canals and prevents bacteria from entering the tooth.
  6. Restoring the Tooth: After the canals have been filled, our dentist will place a temporary filling in the hole created at the beginning of the procedure. This will protect the tooth until a permanent restoration can be placed.
  7. Placing the Permanent Restoration: You might need to return to the dentist for a follow-up appointment to have a permanent filling or crown placed on the tooth.

Who Can Perform a Root Canal?

While any dentist can perform a Root Canal, dentists who specialize in it are called Endodontists or “Root Canal Specialists”. Endodontists have years of specialized study and practice to their benefit.
